I'm not happy

I'm not happy. I gave the students their first written test in this term last Tuesday and they did terribly. It means that they didn't learn anything in the past two weeks. Nevertheless we spent our three last periods reviewing the text for the test. I made questions about the text and I helped them to find the lines where the answers were. We even corrected the exact written questions and answers and I suggested how to prepare them when they studied for the test. Still, as I said before, most of them did terribly because they didn't study as they told me. I don't want to blame my students, but I've learnt that many students don't like being "forced" to study what they don't want to study. That's it.

Prohibido Fumar

Hoy, Lunes 14 de Agosto ha entrado en vigencia la nueva ley que prohíbe fumar en lugares públicos protegiendo la salud de fumadores y no fumadores por lo que es conveniente analizar la real importancia de esta medida.


Respirar el humo del cigarrillo incrementa el riego de enfermedades cardíacas y cáncer al pulmón en los no-fumadores y la única forma en que puede ser controlado es prohibiendo fumar en espacios interiores según un reporte de salud norteamericano. Los cirujanos a cargo señalan que los efectos del humo viciado en la salud de las personas son más fuertes de lo que ellos imaginaban y que la evidencia científica es indiscutible. El humo viciado ( o de segunda mano) no es una simple molestia. Es un serio peligro para la salud que puede llevar a la enfermedad y a la muerte prematura en niños y adultos no fumadores .

The surgeons in charge say health effects of secondhand smoke exposure are more pervasive than they previously thought and the scientific evidence is now indisputable: Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance. It is a serious health hazard that can lead to disease and premature death in children and nonsmoking adults.

Pintando en vacaciones

Han pasado más de dos semanas desde mi último post. La razón es que he estado muy ocupado.Se que es una excusa porque cuando uno quiere hacer algo siempre encuentra el tiempo para hacerlo. Pero al menos he visitado los blogs de mis amigos y los fotologs de mis alumno(a)s.

Necesitaba pintar mi casa, por fuera y por dentro. Más ahora que ya no es la misma que obtuvimos hace 10 años, con solo dos dormitorios. Ahora hay tres nuevos por lo que necesitabamos pintar paredes, cielos, puertas y colocar cubrepiso nuevo. El trabajo fue pesado: pintar por fuera y por dentro, sacar el cubrepiso antiguo, limpiar cada pieza, cada muro y cada cielo del segundo piso. Tuvimos que ocupar todo nuestro tiempo libre. De las cuentas no diré nada.

Pintamos las piezas juntos sin muchos problemas, pero pintar por fuera una casa pareada fue un trabajo mayor. Necesitamos un descanso. Nuestra casa fue un caos total esos días y aún lo es! Dejamos marcas de pintura por todas partes, incluso en piezas por las que no pasamos! Gracias a Dios ya casi estamos terminando el trabajo este fin de semana. Creo que la próxima vez contrataré a alguien para que se ocupe de esto y dejaré la ciudad buscando un poco de paz.!

It's been more than two weeks since my last post. The reason is that I have been busy. I know that's an excuse really because if you want to do something, you'll always try to find time to do it anyway. But at least, I've been visiting my friends' blogs and my students' fotologs
I was in need of painting my house. I mean outside and inside. Our house is not the same we bought 10 years ago. It had only two bedrooms and now there are three new ones. So we needed to paint walls, ceilings, doors and put in new carpets. The work was hard. We removed all the old carpets, we cleaned up every room, every wall, every ceiling of the second floor. We needed to spend all our spare time at the house, and I won't say anything about bills.

We painted rooms inside our house together without too many incidents, but the outside work of a semi-detached house was just so much bigger. We need a rest. Our house was in total chaos these days and still it is! We left spots of paintings everywhere even in rooms we didn’t trek through. Thanks God, we are almost finishing the work this weekend. I think next time I will hire somebody to deal with it and leave the city to find some peace!

Dormir y soñar

¿Te gustan las vacaciones de Invierno?
Ahora estás de vacaciones, puedes estar en pié hasta más tarde y dormir todo el tiempo que quieras. Lo único malo dices tú, es que duran sólo dos semanas pero puedes arreglártelas con eso. Disfruta entonces de tus vacaciones, comparte con tu familia, levántate tarde, acuéstate tarde y ten lindos sueños. Hay personas que al día siguiente no recuerdan ninguno de sus sueños ni siquiera a los minutos de haber despertado y no recuerdan ningún detalle. En mi caso, siempre he tenido la idea de escribirlos tan pronto como despierte, pero...nunca lo he hecho.
Y Ustedes, ¿sueñan? ¿ recuerdan sus sueños al día siguiente?¿ cuanto tiempo los recuerdan? ¿sólo por unos minutos o por horas y días ?

Do you love winter holidays?
Now, you're on winter holidays, you can stay up late and you can sleep all the time you want. The only bad thing you say is that they last only two weeks, but you can deal with it. So enjoy your holidays, share your time with your family, get up late, go bed late and have good dreams.
Some people don't remember none of their dreams the following day, not even for a few fleeting minutes after they're fully awake and they don't remember any details of them. In my case I have always had the idea to write them down as soon as I wake up but...I have never done it.
How about you? Do you dream? Do you remember them the following day? How long do you remember them? Just for a few minutes or for hours and days?

Cette photo a commencé à vieillir avec le temps et moi avec elle. Ça fait déjà plus de vingt ans que je la garde et ce 14 Juillet en la regardant avec nostalgie, je me sens de nouveau à Paris, au Jardin des Tuileries, le soir d'un jour d'hiver loin de ma femme et de mes enfants et regrettant mon pays.
Ce 14 Juillet a été un jour comme tous les autres au lycée. Je me souviens des jours passés où nous fêtions le Jour National de France et un choeur d'élèves chantait La Marseillaise. Maintenant il a fallu se contenter de l'entendre à l'occasion de la Coupe du Monde où elle a résonné plus grandiose que jamais.
Aujourd'hui je suis devenu professeur d'une autre langue étrangère mais mon coeur reste et restera fidèle au français pour toujours.

¿Football o Soccer?

Y terminó el mundial de fútbol ( o de soccer ?)
Lo que el resto del mundo llama fútbol los americanos lo llaman soccer.
En el siguiente texto Harsha Madhyastha de Seattle, Washington, Estados Unidos, se pregunta por qué el deporte americano se llama football si los jugadores para pasar el balón usan preferentemente las manos !!

Football or Handball ?
This thought just struck me. Why the hell is American football called so? The only player who even touches the ball with his foot is the kicker. All other players either throw or catch the ball (well, most of the players are just pushing each other around!). So, why the heck is this sport called "football"? Going by how the game is played, it should be called either "American handball" or "American Wrestle-ball".
In the last couple of years, I have been conspicuously using the term "soccer" to refer to the real football. It's time I reverted back to calling it just football, and referring to American football as American rugby or some such. (Original Text )
